Thanksgiving may be different this year, but preparations are still in full swing and we are focused on giving thanks (and enjoying lots of delicious food!). As much as we enjoy the holidays, they can also be a time of overindulgence, stress, and stomach aches. Here at Healthy Life Chiropractic, we want all of our Newnan, GA patients to enjoy a healthy and happy holiday. Here are our tips.
Eat Before Your Feast
You might think fasting before your Thanksgiving feast will help you save on calories, but it usually leads to overeating. Start the day with a well-balanced breakfast so you stay energized and satisfied throughout the day. Instead of filling up on chips and fat-filled dips, opt for crunchy veggies and healthy dips. You can still snack, just make a balanced plate.
Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration is important no matter what time of year, but drinking water before a big meal can help your body know if you are actually hungry or just eating to eat. Drinking water throughout the day will also help suppress your appetite and keep you from sneaking bites of pumpkin pie before the big meal.
Slow Down
Did you know it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that you’re full? Many people tend to overeat during those 20 minutes, which can lead to discomfort later on. To prevent overeating, slow down during your meal, take pauses between bites, and savor just how delicious everything is.
Take an After-Turkey Stroll
All that turkey may have you feeling like you should just plop on the couch, but going for a walk can help get your digestive system moving. Get your family and/or friends together after eating for a walk around the neighborhood. This will also help burn off some of the calories you’ve just consumed and is also a good way to get moving after all that sitting.
