Thanksgiving has come and gone and the holiday season is officially here. This festive time of year is full of family, friends, fun, and celebration. As much as we enjoy the holidays, they can also bring some unwanted guests (like stress and overeating). Here are our tips to have a healthy holiday season.
Keep Moderation in Mind
One of the best parts of the holiday season is all the sweet treats and savory dishes. As much as we want you to live a healthy life, part of that is indulging every now and then and the holiday season is the perfect time to do it. Just keep moderation in mind! Enjoy that glass of eggnog or Christmas cookies, but don’t go straight for the unhealthy options. Enjoy the colorful fruit and veggie platters and eat well-rounded meals to prevent your health (and waistline) from being unhappy.
Stay Hydrated, Stay Healthy
Hydration is an important part of your health year-round, but the buzz of the holiday season makes it easy to forget to drink water. Water helps your body flush out toxins and helps with digestions, sleep, maintaining clear skin, and more. Keep a bottle with you as your travel, shop, and party hop and make a goal of drinking half your body weight in ounces each day.
Wash Your Hands!
This one seems like a no-brainer, but it’s particularly important during the winter season. Most people refer to this time of year as “flu season”, but we’re usually more susceptible to illness when we’re dehydrated, sleep-deprived, lacking Vitamin D (fewer hours of sunshine in the winter!), and/or aren’t washing our hands enough. To prevent illness, avoid touching your face and wash your hands frequently.
Catch Some Zzz’s
There’s much to do during the holiday season: shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, and more! It can all be overwhelming and stressful. You might think putting off sleep to accomplish more will help you, but sleep deprivation will only hurt your health. In order to repair and recuperate, your body needs restful sleep. So do what you can in a day, power down your phone and TV, and get 7-8 hours of sleep!
