Kick Afternoon Caffeine to the Curb

We love a hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying caffeine in moderation. But, if you’re reaching for the coffee pot multiple times a day, it may be time to kick afternoon caffeine to the curb.

Keep in mind that your body takes hours to process the effects of caffeine, so you may think you’re giving yourself a boost in the afternoon, but you may be preventing yourself from getting restful sleep at night. A study by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine even found that if you consume caffeine six hours before bed, you could lose a full hour of sleep!

Say Goodnight…to your Cell Phone

Did you know electronics should be avoided for at least one hour before you go to bed? So, when the time comes, turn off the TV and put down your cell phone. These electronics emit blue light, which tricks your brain into thinking its daytime, leaving you feeling alert and stimulated when you should be winding down. That blue light also suppresses melatonin, which can have a negative impact on your quality of sleep. Make a goal of avoiding electronics before bed but if you can’t avoid it, at the very least dim the display light.

Make a Sleep Schedule

Making a sleep schedule can help your body regulate its natural sleep cycle. Determine a time that works for you to go to bed each night and wake up every morning and stick to it. Yes, even on the weekends!
