This year has proved to be one full of major changes and as we practice social distancing, one of them is working from home. For many people, it is a huge adjustment to go from working onsite to working from your living room. Whether you are still getting adjusted to your workspace or still figuring out how to conduct meetings remotely, there is a lot of change happening on the work front. With those changes often comes neck, back, and body pain. Here are our tips to keep your spine healthy while working from home.
Create a Workstation
As comfortable as your couch may be, it’s not an ideal workspace for eight hours a day. Just as you’ve arranged proper ergonomics in the office, the same rules apply at home. Make sure you have space to either stand and work or sit at a table or desk (although both would be best!). Your forearms should be parallel to the ground wither you are standing or sitting and if you are sitting, your thighs should also be parallel to the ground. Your seat should have proper back support and if it doesn’t, a small rolled-up towel can provide lumbar support in a pinch. Keep your computer at eye level and check in with your posture regularly.
Stretch It Out
Sometimes you focus so intently, that you forget to move your body. One way to remember to keep moving is to set a time for at least once an hour to get up, stretch your back and legs, and take a quick walk. This will help get your blood moving and supply fresh oxygen and healing nutrients all throughout your body. Not only does this help your body feel better, but it can help prevent injury.
Take A Break
When you are working from the office, you probably take small breaks throughout the day without even realizing it. Whether it’s walking to the restroom, filling up your water bottle, or chatting with a co-worker, it’s important to get your mind a break. When working from home, this may be harder to do. Make a point to take a short break every now and then to manage your stress. This is a great time to get in a few stretches beyond moving your legs and back. Roll your shoulders back, turn your head slowly from side to side, and roll your wrists and ankles to loosen up. You’ll feel better both physically and mentally!
