What's Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

By breathing pure oxygen within a pressurized hyperbaric chamber, hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes the body's natural healing process. A hyperbaric chamber has an air pressure two to three times higher than usual. You can breathe pure oxygen at the normal air pressure, but your lungs can gather much more oxygen under the pressurized conditions provided by the HBOT chamber. The extra oxygen in your blood helps fight bacteria and stimulates the release of growth factors and stem cells, promoting healing.

Why Do You Need Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

An adequate supply of oxygen is necessary for your body's tissues to function correctly. Damaged tissues require even more oxygen to survive. With hyperbaric oxygen therapy, your blood can carry more oxygen to the tissues in need. Many medical conditions can be treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Among the many conditions hyperbaric oxygen therapy can provide natural healing are:

  • Severe anemia

  • Bubbles of air in your blood vessels

  • Burns

  • Decompression sickness

  • Tissue death that is caused by infection of the skin or bones

  • Traumatic brain injury

What Should You Expect During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

In a hyperbaric chamber, the air pressure is about two to three times higher than usual. The air pressure in the chamber will be gradually increased during the first 10 minutes of the treatment to reach the prescribed amount. There will be an audible sound as air is drawn into the chamber, and you will feel a sensation of pressure in your ears similar to that experienced when flying and going to high altitudes. It may be necessary to clear your ears during compression. Some methods you can use to equalize this pressure include yawning, swallowing, and blowing through your nose while holding your nose closed. Most of your treatment time may be spent relaxing, reading, or sleeping. Depending on your doctor's recommendation, your session may last 30 minutes to an hour. The chamber's pressure will gradually be reduced during the last 10 minutes of treatment. As a result, it is possible to feel another popping sensation in your ears. Be sure not to hold your breath during this time.
